L'Illustration. Published weekly, 1919, Paris by Rene Baschet. 3 volumes, each c. 350 pages. Text in French. Profusely illustrated throughout, countless images (often photographic), endless full page plates, many printed in color or with different printing methods, some plates tipped in, some covers bound at rear. A good bit relating to aviation of the era and post-WW I Europe. Period 1/4 leather binding, cloth covers, slightly raised bands, gilt title lettering. Each volume is very large and heavy, a monumental set. Includes supplemental material, including one large plate loosely laid in, other material bound in. Apparently bound for a previous owner and unique set thus. Set is over 100 years old and shows some signs of handling and time. Set is not new or in "new" condition. Bindings gently age worn, joints slightly scuffed, leather rubbed but still supple, cloth with small stains or some fading to front cover of third volume, remains overall attractive as a set. Text block paper is gently toned, some mostly light and forgivable old damp staining to page edges (almost always in the blank margins), internally still well preserved, tight, sound. Still attractive on the shelf. Set displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive. Please review photos for more detail showing how this antique set survives. The asking price reflects the condition based on our examination and 35+ years full time exposure to antiquarian books.
