Description: Up for your consideration is this nice copy of "LIFE OF OMAR AL-KHAYYAMI" written by J.K.M. Shirazi. A fine biography of the Persian poet and philosopher "from the Persian standpoint...(giving) an account of his philosophy as understood by his numerous admirers in his native land." The book was copyrighted in 1905 and this is the only date listed. It was published by T. N. Foulis. It contains 108 pages. The author was able to use "certain extremely rare and interesting" records. "Thanks to religious prejudice, all or most of these are practically inaccessible to Europeans." This, indeed, gives the book a different prospective than any other you may have read on this subject. This copy is in GOOD + Condition. The decorated hard cover shows considerable shelf wear including dirt, rubbing and bumped corners. There is tape along the spine, I think as a preventive measure to avoid more decay to the spine and to hold the back cover on. The spine is tight and the thick pages are crisp and clean - no dog-eared pages; no rips, tears or markings. The front end page is separated from the book; but included. The beginning and end of each chapter includes decorations similar in color and design to the one on the Title Page (see scan). This is a good copy of a great century-old book. Chapters Include: His Birthplace His Birth and Parentage The Man of Science Omar's Philosophy Death and Unpopularity Also in this auction is this nice copy of "RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM" translated into English verse by Edward FitzGerald The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam is a collection of selected poems authored by Persian astronomer and mathematician Omar Khayyam. During his lifetime, Omar Khayyam wrote about one thousand poems. Edward Fitzgerald gave this title to his translation of selected poems because they were written into quatrains. Rubaiyat is the arabic for root of four, as in four line verses of which quatrains are made up of. The book was copyrighted in 1942. It was published by Walter J. Black. It contains 172 pages including Notes and a Vocabulary. It includes the "Five Authorized Versions". This edition was translated by Fitzgerald in the late 19th century. It has become a very popular edition. "The nature of a translation very much depends on what interpretation one places on Khayyam's philosophy. Fitzgerald gave the Rubaiyat a distinct fatalistic spin, although it has been claimed that he softened the impact of Khayyam's nihilism and his preoccupation with the mortality and transience of all things." This copy is in VERY GOOD Condition. The hard cover shows minimal shelf wear including some dirt. The decorations and lettering on the front and spine are sharp and bright. The spine is tight and the pages are crisp and clean - no dog-eared pages; no rips, tears or markings. These two books will be a wonderful addition to your Collection or Library !!!
