This was an elaborate first, featuring gilt-impressed red cloth binding; tissue-protected steel engravings of both Douglass and Lincoln; and 16 other full-page illustrations. This is the scarce original first edition, before the 1882 Betts edition or the 1892 revision. Original boards are soiled and worn, with a painted black bar on the spine (please see pics). Period library plate with "discarded" writing on intact front endpapers. Both rear endpapers and last page of text are chipped and repaired with binder's tissue (please see pics). Original frontispiece tissue and original Lincoln engraving tissue are intact. Engravings are lightly foxed. Binding is very tight and square. Text and illustrations are very clean, bright and crisp. 518 pages. Measures approximately 8 x 5.25-inches.
