The author, Liam O'Flaherty (1896 -- 1984) was an Irish novelist and short-story writer, and one of the foremost socialist writers in the first part of the 20th century, writing about the common people's experience and from their perspective (from his Wikipedia page). The book is "a swift moving, intensely virile novel of Ireland, torn by dissension and Civil War. The plot hinges on the contrast in temperament of the two leaders, Crosbie, the idealist, hating the blood-thirstiness of warfare, and opening himself to suspicion of cowardice, even in the mind of the woman he loves; Tracy, a gunman and dare devil, who leads his men to death and Crosbie to martyrdom. One is embroiled in the plots and counterplots, and sees Ireland, destroying herself by dissension, with even her leaders uncertain of their aims and their motives" (from Kirkus reviews).
