IMPORTANT AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY A MEMBER OF GEORGE WASHINGTON’S LIFE GUARD TO THE FAMOUS PAINTER JOHN TRUMBULL REQUESTING HIS REVOLUTIONARY WAR PENSION Reads in full: “Ballston Spa [NY], May 27th, 1834, Sir: Altho unacquainted with you since the close of our Revolutionary struggle yet I take the freedom to write to you, to inquire if you remember a man by the name of Paul Willson who belonged to Genl. Washington’s guard and for about four years acted as his orderly or Major of his Guard, and as I was the only New England man in his Guard I was of course called Washington’s Yankee both by the Americans & British. I was at the Battle of Bunker Hill, Trenton, Brandywine, Monmouth, with General Wayne at Stoney Point and at the Capture of Lord Cornwallis at York Town, and a number of small skirmishes with the British have been three times wounded at Monmouth my horse was killed under me. I wish you to write as soon as maybe what you can recollect of me and my Services. My circumstances are such as I really need the reward our Government has seen fit to bestow, if I am rightly and honorably to attain them. I am Sir your respectfully, Paul Willson. Col.
