The artist, Andre Dignimont (1891-1965), had a career that spanned more than four decades, working primarily on books (illustrating more than fifty) and theatre decoration; he formed his own distinct style using washes of watercolour incorporated into pen and ink. His style perfectly evokes the emotions of this collection of Baudelaire's poetry which expresses the changing nature of beauty in modern, industrializing Paris during the nineteenth century and coined the term "modernité" to designate the fleeting, ephemeral experience of life in an urban metropolis... DESCRIPTION: Unbound, in the original wraps with the original glassine dust jacket, in the French fashion; original tissue-guarded signed watercolour on the front blank of the head of a young woman, inscribed to Jean Rousset as set forth above; frontispiece, small illustration on the title page, and an Aadditional eleven illustrations throughout by Dignimont, engraved on wood in colors by Gerard Angiolini, small decorations on almost every page in different colours; quarto size (approximately 11" tall), pagination: (i-ii) being the half-title and limitation pages, title page (1), blank (2), dedication by Charles Baudelaire (3), blank (4), 5-225 includes Table des Matieres at the end, blank (226), colophon (227); limited edition of 1000 copies plus an unspecified number for the artist and "aux amis du "florilege' ", this being one of those and marked such. Enclosed in a chemise of stiff cards covered with paper marked as vellum, the whole in a slipcase covered with the same paper, the box opening lined with pink cloth. FINE CONDITION overall, the wraps clean and corners straight beneath the glassine dust wrapper, the colours of the illustrations vivid and unfaded, the pages clean and bright; The chemise is very good with some wear as seen; it is sturdy, but there is some prior restoration to the head of the spine; the slipcase is also very good plus, with light overall wear and some minor prior restoration; it is now strong and sturdy.
