His first lessons were at the age of ten. As a teenager, he studied the steel guitar and played in Country & Western bands. Later, he played electric guitar in rock & roll bands, formed his own dance band, and began playing for country clubs, dance studios, weddings, and other social events. Following his exposure to acoustical guitar sounds of the bossa nova played by guitarists João Gilberto, Luis Bonfa, and Antonio Carlos Jobim, Dave bought a classical guitar in order to play this new musical form, Brazilian Jazz. He began to study the classical guitar and, in the process, became captivated by the abundant classical music available for the instrument. In 1996, Dave attended master classes in Bach and counterpoint at the Paginni School of Guitar, taught by the director of the school and award-winning guitarist Steve Turley. The next year, at Steve's request, Dave designed and held group classes in Brazilian Guitar and Fingerstyle Folk Guitar. Recently, Dave developed a methods handbook for Brazilian Jazz Guitar. Dave plays a 1994 Robert Ruck classical guitar.
