Description: LEADING LADIES OF THE STUDIO ERA - 5 Disc Set A Deluxe Film Fan's Showcase of Five Unforgettable Actresses BETTE DAVIS: NOW VOYAGER Black & White Academy Award winner Bette Davis stars with Paul Henreid in one of the greatest screen romances of all time -- NOW, VOYAGER. Young Charlotte Vale (Davis) leads a deeply repressed life suffering under a domineering mother, until psychiatrist Dr Jaquith (Claude Rains) encourages her to emerge from her cocoon. On a trans-Atlantic voyager, Vale falls in love with Jerry Durrence (Paul Henreid) who is trapped in a loveless marriage. Rather than breakup Durrence's marriage, Vale becomes a surrogate mother to his emotionally disturbed daughter, rescuing her from the fate from which she was rescued by Dr Jaquith. JOAN CRAWFORD: MILDRED PIERCE Black & White Joan Crawford is a tawdry waitress who slept her way to financial security so as to provide a rosy future for her beloved daughter, only to be rewarded by having her true love stolen away by that same daughter. Unhappily married to philandering Burt Pierce (Bruce Bennett), she divorces him keeping custody of her two beloved daughters Veda (Ann Blyth) and Kay (Jo Anne Marlow). To keep oldest daughter Veda in comparative luxury, Mildred takes a series of jobs, culminating with a waitressing position. Mildred turns the restaurant into a genuine moneyspinner. She seduces slimy real estate agent Wally Fay (Jack Carson) in order to afford her own establishment, which grows into a chain of "Mildred Pierce's" throughout Southern California. When youngest daughter Kay dies, Mildred smothers Veda in affection and creature comforts. She goes so far as to enter into a loveless with wealthy Monty Bergaron in order to improve her social standing. In return, the caddish Bergaron enters into several shady business deals which bankrupt Mildred. He caps this misbehavior by carrying on an affair with his stepdaughter. JUDY GARLAND: FOR ME AND MY GAL Black & White FOR ME AND MY GAL chronicles the love and struggles of vaudeville team Harry Palmer (Gene Kelly, in his film debut) and Jo Hayden (Judy Garland) as they pursue their big dream of playing New York's prestigious Palace Theater. Just as that dream is about to finally come true, World War I breaks out and Harry is called into service. When he maims himself to avoid the draft, Jo can't forgive his cowardice, and Harry must search his soul for a way to redeem himself in the eyes of his country, and the woman who taught him to love it. The score is filled with old favorites from World War I, including "Beautiful Doll," "You Were A Tulip," "Over There," "Long, Long Trail," and "Oui Oui Marie," but it's Kelly and Garland's sublime rendition of the title tune that lingers... ELIZABETH TAYLOR: FATHER OF THE BRIDE Black & White "I would like to say a few words about weddings," a weary man says from the middle of a muddle of rice and scattered bottles. What follows is a warm, witty look at what it means to be FATHER OF THE BRIDE. Spencer Tracy is the father and Elizabeth Taylor the bride in this lovely Vincente Minnelli-directed classic. Taylor is glowingly showcased -- and reflected in three mirrors when first seen in a wedding gown. Tracy's performance captures every loving father's exasperations and joys as the day approaches. It also captured the fourth of his nine Best Actor Academy Award nominations. The film also earned nominations for Best Picture and Screenplay. Here comes the bride, there goes dad's wallet...and everyone's heart. What sparkling fun!! GRACE KELLY: DIAL M FOR MURDER Color Alfred Hitchcock's screen version of Fredrick Knott's stage hit DIAL M FOR MURDER is a tasty blend of elegance and suspense casting Grace Kelly, Ray Milland and Robert Cummings as the points of a romantic triangle. Kelly won the New York Film Critics and National Board of Review Best Actress Awards for this and two other acclaimed 1954 performances (Hitchcock's Rear Window and her Oscar-honored work in The Country Girl). She loves Cummings; her husband Milland plots her murder. But when he dials a Mayfair exchange to set the plot in motion, his right number gets the wrong answer -- and gleaming scissors become a deadly weapon. Dial "M" for the Master of Suspense at his most stylish. Check out my other items! Be sure to add me to your favorites list!
