Description: Please see my feedback. I have mainly been selling amber fossils for over 15 years on eBay and do not sell fake amber only genuine material from now extinct plant sources not glass or plastic embedded with present day inclusions. I welcome you to consider my genuine amber fossils as well. Thank you! This sale is for one unique fossil tooth formerly belonging to an extinct genus Otodus species obliquus shark. Teeth and vertebrae are the only parts of the shark known to have survived the fossilization process. This large tooth is approximately 4.6 cm or 1.81 inches from tooth tip to end of root and weighs 21.6 grams. Please be careful. The tooth has one of its sharp cusps (small side teeth) and is quite sharp at the tip and edges. This particular tooth has no restoration. Please have a look at all the pictures to see the degree of preservation of this particular tooth. A U.S. nickel is shown for size comparison. This represents a collectible fossil specimen from 40 to 60 million years ago. These sharks belong to the same Family that includes the Great White and they were likely a distant ancestor to the largest known shark, the Megalodon. Otodus is the genus from which the species megalodon belongs. It is estimated by some scientists that every 1 inch length of shark tooth represents around 10 feet body length of the shark. Otodus is an extinct genus of mackerel shark which lived from the Paleocene to the Pliocene epoch. The name Otodus comes from Ancient Greek ōt, meaning “ear” and odoús, meaning “tooth” – thus, “ear-shaped tooth”. The teeth of this shark are large with triangular crown, smooth cutting edges, and visible cusps on the roots. Scientists suggest that oldest sharks at least reached 30 ft in total length with a maximum length of 40 ft. Otodus sharks are bigger than any other carnivorous fish in the sea today, being one and a half times larger than the largest recorded great white shark!Otodus ruled the seas during the Paleocene and the Eocene (45 - 60 million years ago). It is a quite dominant species in the phosphate quarries of Khouribga Basin in Morocco. I can send you a combined invoice to save on shipping if needed.
