Johan Fredrik Constantin (Conny) Burman, born January 14, 1831 in Stockholm, died September 21, 1912 in Stockholm, was a Swedish draftsman and artist. Conny Burman did early cartoons. The signature as a cartoonist was just Conny. Biography [edit | edit wikitext]In 1851, Burman began studying at Uppsala University, where he graduated in chamber music. He then worked at several government offices in Stockholm, mainly the Riksbank and the Riksdag's chancellery and as a drawing teacher at several educational institutions. He applied for a position as a drawing teacher at Stockholm's lyceum but instead became a singer there. Among his students was the young August Strindberg who studied at Stockholm's lyceum between 1861 and 1867. Burman also started a private drawing school on the school's premises. In The Maid's Son, Burman is mentioned as the one who leads the choirs. Burman published several drawing courses for schools. Under the pseudonym Conny, he published collections of satirical drawings. He also exhibited watercolors and charcoal drawings. The booklets Caricatures and Krumeluler were published every Christmas between 1869 and 1894.Strindberg noted on his sickbed on April 30, 1912, after Conny Burman sent him a greeting, "One it is. -- One it is! Our salvation can! -- Christ's Kyrie! -- Christ's Kyrie! Sung at the Stockholm Lyceum 1864-65 under Conny Burman's direction, my singing teacher."[1] Strindberg died on 14 May 1912 and Burman just over four months later.Bibliography[edit | edit wikitext]Books by Conny Burman• Small selections from the wastebasket (1866-68)• Crumbs (1869-82)• Caricatures (1883-94)• Memories (1904)• Postscript (1905)• From the Gossip Bench (1907)Books about Conny Burman• Herman Hofberg: Swedish biographical hand encyclopedia• Swedish artists' dictionary• Nordic family book• Emil Norlander: Fog figures from Stockholm life (1919)• Alice Rasmussen: "A worry runs through the soul-" : Strindberg's home and places of residence in the Nordic region• Conny Burman in Libris I am selling my collection of paintings by European and Russian artists.
