Lalo - Symphonie Espagnole - Kyung Wha Chung - Vieuxtemps

Description: Vieuxtemps 5th and Lalo Symphonie Espagnole: an inspired pairing which works really well. Both are unfairly thought of as being slightly musically lightweight vehicles for musical virtuosity. Kyung Wha Chung shows there is lustrous depth and real grain beneath the shining polish. Never have I heard these played more beautifully or more musically. The Lalo especially is a real recording masterpiece, with the added sound benefit of digital recording, though the 1976 Vieuxtemps and 1979 Ravel are demonstration quality analogue stereo it must be said. The Ravel is a fabulous display of Kyung Wha Chung's spontaneity; performances such as these make you immediately aware of her presence, just as if it were a live performance. The Vieuxtemps is one of several wonderful concerti by the great teacher of Ysa e, of which the 4th and 5th are occasionally recorded though rarely performed in concert. It is such a pity that the concert hall is dominated by a handful of old favourites when there are magnificent violin masterworks like this around to enjoy.
