Previous ownersThis book is from a collection of books previously owned by John "Christian" Smith and Helene Guilet Smith. Christian Smith, was a stage director for Radio City Music Hall and subsequently for the New York City Opera. Helene Guilet Smith was a mezzo-soprano for the New York City Opera and also taught voice at The American Musical and Dramatic Academy. A card found in the book to "Chers Guilets" (see photos) indicates the book was possibly owned by Helene Guilet Smith's father, Daniel Guilet. Daniel Guilet, who was born in Rostov, Russia in 1899, studied with Georges Enesco and Guillaume Remy at the Paris Conservatoire. In 1941, Mr. Guilet moved to the United States where he formed the Guilet Quartet. During his career, Mr. Guilet was also concertmaster of the NBC Symphony Orchestra and a founding member of the Beaux Arts Trio. Daniel Guilet died at the age of 91 in 1990. While the majority of the Smiths' books were heavily notated, this book appears to be clean, other than a couple of small page tears and wear to to the boards and loss at the spine.
