Description: Jennings Red Barn antiques in New Martinsville, West Virginia sold this beautiful and rare Purple Slag Large Turkey Covered Dish (L. G. Wright mould #70-17) and was made in November of 1978. As far as we know, this is the largest covered animal dish ever pressed in any slag color. This was a private production item for Jennings using Wright's mould and pressed by Westmoreland. My mother purchased this one from Jennings Red Barn. Only about 50 were successfully produced - many cracked or deformed during production and were not sellable. In over 20 years on eBay, we do not remember ever seeing one of these turkeys for sale. This 5+ lb. turkey measures about 9" across and 8.5" tall and is unmarked. Today, Mosser Glass of Cambridge, Ohio owns this mould and have reported to us that it is one of the their most challenging moulds to produce successfully. Please Note: This mould is shown in the book we wrote: Slag & Marble Glass, The Prominent Years, 1959-1985 (N. Taves & D. Jennings) by Schiffer Publishing in 2007 on page 127. Condition: In checking this piece over, two things should be noted. On the front rim of the bottom is a slightly rough spot along the inside edge - it is not a chip. We have seen two other of these purple slag turkeys and each had this slight roughness. Also, on the underside of the lid is a small cooling crack. See the photos with arrows and notes. All items are packed with great care and are usually double boxed. We love glass and do not want to be responsible for a piece of glass history being destroyed. Combined shipping is not possible on this item. Inv. #945
