KING WILLIAM IV - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 04/10/1788 - HFSID 253363 KING WILLIAM IV Letter handwritten, dated, and signed by the prince in 1788 to P. William Allen. He gives his regrets that he can't accept the son of one of Allen's friends on his ship the Andromeda, but recommends what he can do to get ready when the Andromeda returns to port. He also congratulated Allen for being given command of a regiment of the Welsh Regulars Autograph Letter Signed: "William" 3p, 7 x 10, 1 sheet folded, front and verso. April 10, 1788. Docketed on verso to "P William Allen" in unknown hand. In full: "Dear Sir, I have to [illegible] the receipt of yours of the 3d. instant enclosing a letter from [illegible] Drake of Bruns-wick respecting her son, who is included for the Royal Navy. In answer to that lady you will, if you please tell her that at this present moment there is no vacancy on board the Andromd-da and even if there was the time would not admit of her son coming over to join the ship before I must set sail: but as I am to return next spring. I shall then be ready to receive the young gentleman: in the mean time I should [illegible] it could be most for his advantage to be sent over to this country and be placed at the naval academy or be in a private house where he may learn algebra, a sufficiency of mathematicks [sic] and keeping ship's reckoning; all which he easily learn in the course of eight to ten months. At the same time I must request you will desire [illegible] to present my most respectful com-pliments to my aunt the Duchess, and assure her I am very sensible of his remembrance. I am glad this business has afforded me an opportunity of renewing my acquaintance with you, my dear General. I congratulate you heartily on the events which have happened since I have had the pleasure of seeing you: the one is your return to England and the probability of your remaining: the other is His Majesty having conferred on you the regi-ment of the Welsh Regulars: permit me to recommend to you [illegible] whose brother is with me: I [illegible] he will make a good officer if I am to judge of his brother. You must I suppose have heard of the [illegible] lass I met with in the death of my worthy friend [illegible]. Ever believe me, Yours sincerely,". This letter was written a year before William was given the title Duke of Clarence. Prince William Henry (1765-1837), the third son of King George III, reigned as King William IV from 1830 until his death. Since his older brothers, including King George IV, predeceased him without legitimate offspring, he inherited the throne, becoming the last Hanoverian monarch of England. William, who himself had 10 illegitimate children, also died without an official heir, resulting in the accession of his niece, Queen Victoria. As a young officer in the Royal Navy, the future king served in New York during the American Revolution, where George Washington authorized a plot to kidnap him, if this could be done "without offering insult or indignity." Serving in the West Indies, he formed a lifelong friendship with Lord Horatio Nelson. In 1789, King George III made William the Duke of Clarence reluctantly, fearing that his reform-minded son would be a vote against him in the House of Lords. William forced his royal father's hand by threatening to run for the House of Commons, a threat which appalled the King. As a member of the House of Lords, William - now the Duke of Clarence - generally supported reform measures, with one notable exception: he supported slavery and the slave trade. Despite his naval background, and despite being made a titular Lord High Admiral, William unsuccessfully sought active duty during the Napoleonic Wars; his early opposition to war with France probably prevented this, although he later supported the conflict. William IV proved a popular monarch, noted for shunning pomp and ceremony. His reign saw the passage, with his support, of the Reform Act of 1832, expanding the British electorate, and also - despite his earlier opposition - the ending of the slave trade. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Handwriting smeared in several places, but not at signature. Light show-through, which touches handwriting, but not signature. Light tears along right edge. Tackhead-sized holes in page 3. Random ink stains. Rounded corners. Tape repairs inside letter. Pinholes in upper left corner. Folded once horizontally and twice vertically. Separations, holes and tears along folds and spine. Otherwise, fine condition. See more material from these signers: KING WILLIAM IV See more listings in our ROYALTY (410) category.
