KING GEORGE IV (GREAT BRITAIN) - DOCUMENT SIGNED 02/05/1829 CO-SIGNED BY: PRIME MINISTER ROBERT PEEL (GREAT BRITAIN) - HFSID 43163 KING GEORGE IV of the UNITED KINGDOM The King and his Home Secretary sign off on an 1829 petition in brown ink Manuscript Document Signed: "George R[ex]" as King of the United Kingdom in brown ink. Also signed, "Rob. Peel" as Home Secretary. 1 page front and verso, 7¾x12½. No place, 1829 February 5. Petition for Sir James Scarlett, the King's counsel, to appear on behalf of Robert Wyatt. Docketed on verso. 1¾-inch diameter red seal affixed at left margin. Britain's KING GEORGE IV (1762-1837), the eldest son of King George III, became Regent for his mentally ill father in 1811. While Regent, his choice of Cabinet helped conclude the Napoleonic Wars in 1815. War's end brought peace and depression when government demand for supplies ceased. Prices fell and thousands became unemployed, instigating the first labor unions. Upon his father's death in 1820, George ascended to the throne. His Age saw steps to curb the depression with the Corn Law (1815) and currency deflation (1821), and George IV also initiated penal code reform and abolition of the death penalty (1822). Known for this artistic tastes (his appreciation of the arts led to the development of Regent Street, Regent's Park and the restoration of Windsor Castle) and dissolute lifestyle, George had married a Catholic widow, but the marriage was deemed invalid under British law and the King was persuaded to take an official wife, his cousin, Caroline of Brunswick. The couple had one daughter, Princess Charlotte, who died in 1817, leaving no heirs. Therefore, upon the King's death in 1830, the year after this letter, one of George's younger brothers became William IV. Sir ROBERT PEEL, 2nd Baronet (1788-1850) was a Conservative politician who served many roles in the British government including Home Secretary (1828-1830), Chancellor of the Exchequer (1834-1835) and as Prime Minister (1834-1835 and 1841-1846). He is best remembered for his work as Home Secretary creating the modern concept of the police forces (where the terms "bobbies" and "peelers" originated), as well as his Prime Ministerial issuing of the Tamworth Manifesto in 1834 which shattered the Tory Party and created the Conservative Party. Lightly creased, folds (not at signature). Lightly soiled. ¼-inch hole at upper center blank margin. Identifying label affixed at lower left blank margin of signature page.
