HISTORICAL QUOTE: "In war there is no second prize for the runner-up."General Omar Bradley HISTORICAL NOTE: ERICH 'BUBI' HARTMANN GERMAN WWII FIGHTER PILOT Erich Alfred Hartmann (19 April 1922 – 20 September 1993), known as the "Blonde Knight" was a German fighter pilot during World War II and the most successful fighter ace in the history of aerial warfare. He flew 1,404 combat missions and participated in aerial combat on 825 separate occasions. He was credited with shooting down a total of 352 Allied aircraft: 345 Soviet and 7 American while serving with the Luftwaffe. During his career, Hartmann was forced to crash-land his fighter 16 times after either mechanical failure or damage received from parts of enemy aircraft he had shot down; he was never shot down by direct enemy action. Hartmann, a pre-war glider pilot, joined the Luftwaffe in 1940 and completed his fighter pilot training in 1942. He was posted to the veteran Jagdgeschwader 52 (JG 52—52nd Fighter Wing) on the Eastern Front and placed under the supervision of some of the Luftwaffe's most experienced fighter pilots. Under their guidance, Hartmann steadily developed his tactics. On 29 October 1943, Hartmann was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross for destroying 148 enemy aircraft and the Oak Leaves to the Knight's Cross for destroying 202 enemy aircraft on 2 March 1944. Exactly four months later, he received the Swords to the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves for shooting down 268 enemy aircraft. Ultimately, Hartmann earned the coveted Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds on 25 August 1944 for 301 aerial victories. At the time of its presentation to Hartmann, this was Germany's highest military decoration. Hartmann achieved his 352nd and last aerial victory at midday on 8 May 1945, hours before the German surrender. HISTORICAL NOTE CONTINUED: GERMAN WWII FIGHTER PLANE MESSERSCHMITT Bf. 109The Messerschmitt Bf. 109, designed by Willy Messerschmitt and Robert Lusser, is a German World War II fighter aircraft that was the backbone of the Luftwaffe?s fighter force. The Bf. 109 first saw operational service in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War and was still in service at the dawn of the jet age at the end of World War II in 1945. It was one of the most advanced fighters of the era, including such features as all-metal monocoque construction, a closed pilot canopy, retractable landing gear and it was powered by a liquid-cooled, inverted V-12 aero engine. It was commonly called the Me 109, most often by Allied aircrew and even among the German aces themselves, even though this was not the official German designation. From the end of 1941, the Bf.109 was steadily being supplemented by the radial engine powered Focke-Wulf Fw. 190.Reflecting Messerschmitt's belief in low-weight, low-drag, simple monoplanes, the armament for the Bf. 109 was placed in the fuselage. This kept the wings very thin and light. Two synchronized machine guns were mounted in the cowling, firing over the top of the engine and through the propeller arc. However when it was discovered in 1937 that the RAF was planning eight-gun batteries for its new Hawker Hurricane and Supermarine Spitfire fighters, it was decided that the Bf. 109 should be more heavily armed. The problem was that the only place available to mount additional guns was in the wings. Only one spot was available in each wing, between the wheel well and slats, with room for only one gun, either a 7.92 mm MG 17 machine gun or a 20mm MG FF or MG FF/M cannon. However, from the 109F-series onwards, guns were no longer carried inside the wings. Instead, the Bf 109F had a 20 mm gun firing through the propeller shaft. An interesting side note is that Adolf Galland disliked the removal of the wing gun mounts and actually had his Bf. 109F-2 field-modified with a 20mm MG FF/M auto-cannon installed internally in each wing. The Bf. 109 was flown by the three top-scoring German fighter aces of World War II, who claimed 928 victories among them while flying with Jagdgeschwader 52 (mainly on the Eastern Front). The highest scoring fighter ace of all time, Erich Hartmann, flew the Bf. 109 and was credited with 352 aerial victories. Hans-Joachim Marselle, who achieved 158 aerial victories, making him the highest-scoring German ace in the North African Campaign, also flew the aircraft. Several other top-ranking German aces also flew the Bf. 109, including Gerhard ?Gerd? Barkhorn (301 kills), Gunther Rall (275 kills), Otto Kittel (267 kills), Heinrich Bär (220 kills), and Major Hermann Graf (212 kills). The Bf. 109 underwent numerous improvements including the development of the G series or 'Gustav' which was introduced in mid-1942. The G series initial variants differed only in minor details from the Bf 109F, most notably in the more powerful (1,455 HP) Daimler-Benz 605 engine. The later G series (G-5 through G-14) was produced in a multitude of variants, with uprated armament and a two-coolant radiator system. By early 1944, tactical requirements resulted in the addition of MW-50 water injection boost and high-performance superchargers, which boosted the engine output to 1,800?2,000 PS (1,775-1,973 HP) making the aircraft a much more efficient fighter plane at both low and high altitudes. While the Messerschmitt Bf. 109 was initially conceived as an interceptor fighter plane, later models were developed to fulfill multiple tasks, serving as bomber escort fighters, fighter-bombers, day & night fighters, all-weather fighter, ground attack aircraft and as reconnaissance aircraft. It was supplied to and operated by several countries during and after the end of World War II. The Bf. 109 is the most produced fighter aircraft in history, with a total of 33,984 airframes produced from 1936 to April 1945. HISTORICAL NOTE CONTINUED: THE WWII GERMAN LUFTWAFFE The Luftwaffe was the aerial warfare branch of the combined German Wehrmacht military forces during World War II. Germany’s military air arms during World War I, the Luftstreikräfte of the Army and the Marine-Fliegerabteilung of the Navy, had been disbanded in May 1920 as a result of the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, which stated that Germany was forbidden to have any air force. During the interwar period, German pilots were trained secretly in violation of the treaty at Lifpetsk Air Base. With the rise of the Nazi Party and the repudiation of the Versailles Treaty, the Luftwaffe was officially established on 26 February 1935. The Luftwaffe proved instrumental in the German victories across Poland and Western Europe (Including the Battle of France) in 1939 and 1940. During the Battle of Britain, however, despite inflicting severe damage to the RAF’s (Royal Air Force) infrastructure and, during the subsequent Blitz, devastating many British cities, the German air force failed to batter the beleaguered British into submission. From 1942, Allied bombing campaigns gradually destroyed the Luftwaffe's fighter arm. From late 1942, the Luftwaffe used its surplus ground, support and other personnel to raise Luftwaffe Field Divisions. In addition to its service in the West (Western Front), the Luftwaffe operated over the Soviet Union, North Africa and Southern Europe. Despite its belated use of advanced turbojet and rocket-propelled aircraft for the destruction of Allied bombers, the Allies’ superior numbers and improved tactics overwhelmed the Luftwaffe. In addition, a lack of trained pilots and aviation fuel further contributed to the demise of the Luftwaffe. In January 1945, during the closing stages of the Battle of the Bulge, the Luftwaffe made a last-ditch effort (Operation Bodenplatte) to win air superiority, however this operation also met with failure. With rapidly dwindling supplies of petroleum, oil and lubricants after this campaign, and as part of the entire combined Wehrmacht military forces as a whole, the Luftwaffe ceased to be an effective fighting force.
