Angkor Wat 'Bayon' Style. 16/17th Century. Tantric Multi-Armed Hindu Deity 'Hevajra'. Overview: An exquisite Khmer statue, depicting a rare interpretation of the multi-armed Tantra Deity ‘Hevajra’ from Khmer mythology, beautifully modeled in traditional Bayon style. A dynamic representation of a Buddhist enlightened Being, associated with the practice of Tantra, a method of accelerating the path to 'Nirvana', or the release from individual consciousness and the cycle of life and death. Hevajra is a male Tantra Deity that holds personified symbols for the Buddhist concept of a supreme being in the state of non-duality, which points to the idea that the universe and all its multiplicity are ultimately expressions or appearances of one essential reality, the fundamental quality of everything as one part or made of one. Description: Portrayed in this rare rendition, the image radiates a powerful blend of calm and restrained inner energy, depicted with his eleven heads, standing perfectly balanced in a strong frontal posture, shown with eleven arms out-stretched in an arc on each side, while holding attributes in each hand. xxxx Unclothed above the waist the deity is fashioned with an elaborate jeweled necklace, wearing a long stylized sampot , secured by a decorative belt draped with pendulous pendants, and a central panel fashioned at the front extended down to the bottom hem. Still visible, each of the faces has broad features that are typical of Khmer carvings, normally expressed by almond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose, and wide mouth. Elongated earlobes frame each face, adorned by long triangular earrings falling to the shoulders. The heads are intricately joined by inter-connected 'diadem' crowns, rising to a cylindrical Chignon style headdress. xxxx The figure is classified as 'Bayon' style art, presented in its original unaltered and unrepaired condition.
