The book was illustrated by Paul Hardy (born David Paul Frederick Hardy, 1862-1942) well-known for his work on historical and adventure stories and re-issues of classic novels. The volume is bound in a full dark brandy pebble-grained calfskin with the spine ornate decoration, title, author and publisher tooled in gold, text block ornamented with gilt edges and endpapers printed in deep purple. A red label on the front pastedown endpaper reads Smart & Mookerdum, Booksellers & Stationers. Rangoon. in gold lettering. The Smart & Mookerdum, established in 1897, was a pre-eminent supplier and purveyor of fiction, non-fiction, periodicals, newspapers, comics, artwork and stationery during the colonial period of Rangoon, and was mentioned by George Orwell in his novel Burmese Days: ‘Oh, the joy of those Rangoon trips! The rush to Smart and Mookerdum’s bookshop for the new novels out from England.’ Condition The book is in excellent antiquarian condition with the exception of a light ware to the boards' corners, spine head and tail, and minor signs of age on some of the pages (please see the pictures).
