Most Israel First Day Leafs (FDL) vary slightly in size, appx 5-1/2” x 8-1/4” in size, constructed of thin cardstock and suitable for framing and/or gift-giving. Each FDL combines an Israel stamp with the appropriate official Israel Post Office 1st Day Cancel, all on a generic background. Except for the four 1986 issues with regular 1st Day cancels and a reverse description, all have a blank reverse and a 1st DAY FANCY CANCEL. These FDL have a rather strange history. They were designed and produced by an Israeli dealer after the German “Erstaggblatt,” which are very popular in Germany and elsewhere. The intent was to produce a FDL for every Israel issue starting with the first FDL in 1986. Quantities were to be 200 to 300 per Leaf, with perhaps some exceptions. Four FDL were produced in 1986 with the numbered quantity shown as 300 of each. Another attempt was made in 1996 with perhaps a dozen different issues including the 14 stamp Israel writers sheetlet, with a leaf for each writer issued (each numbered and sold as one item XX.X). These were produced with the numbered quantity shown as 200 of each. THESE FIRST DAY LEAFS NEVER SAW THE LIGHT of DAY. This seller signed an agreement with the Israeli dealer to market and sell ALL these FDL. The dealer forwarded a small quantity of each Leaf, after which for reasons still obscure to this seller, the dealer reneged on the offer, and the agreement lapsed. Other than the quantities this seller received, (10-20 of each) not one FDL has ever come on the market in over 25 years, and at this time, it is not known what happened to the balance printed, or in fact if they were ever printed, or if printed, subsequently destroyed. These Leafs are NOT catalogued anywhere, nor are they available anywhere else. After over 25 years hidden in a box, we recently found them - all in excellent condition, and are offering them here all at the very low price of $7.95 each in the first public offering of these leafs. They are NOT rare or valuable, but make for an interesting topical material addition to a stamp collection, or as a gift for example, to someone who collects music, authors etc, for which there are +/- 10 leafs available only of each issue produced.
