Description: JPL Pouyat Limoges Set of 2 HP 8 3/8" Plates 1890-1932 Strawberries Gooseberries Elegant Decorative Set of 2 PLATES 8 3/8" from JPL (Jean Pouyat) Limoges, France, HAND PAINTED by a Talented Artist F.B. Jipson, Beautiful STRAWBERRIES & GOOSEBERRIES w/GREEN LEAVES, circa 1890-1932 DESCRIPTION: This set of plates was designed in a very classic pattern with hand painted strawberries with blooms, gooseberries with green leaves and stems by a talented artist, F. B. Jipson. The overall quality of the design is quite professional. The fruits are set on washes that vary in color from orange to yellow to green. The 1/4" wide gold ring around most of the circumference of the plate is outlined in a hand drawn black lines on both sides. The leaves & fruits are painted across this gold band. The back of the plate is the high white of the porcelain. CONDITION: While this plate is classified as used, its condition is superb. We can find no defects or damage. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches, crazing or hairlines. There is no wear to the paint or to the gold on the rim. See the photos. DIMENSIONS: The plates have a diameter of 8 3/8" and a height of 1". HISTORY/MARKS: The Pouyat family was one of the oldest French names associated with the porcelain in the Limoges region dating all the way back to the 1700’s. Jean Pouyat began a company in 1842 at Limoges and the business was carried on by his sons after his death in 1849. About 1883, the company became known as La Ceramique. The now famous JPL backstamps were used beginning in 1851 and the specific one that is on this plate is called mark #5 (Mary Frank Gaston in Collector’s Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3rd edition) which was used from 1890-1932.
