Description: "Homage to the Square" serigraph (screenprint) "WLS II", printed in 1968 by Siebdruck-Atelier Herbert Geier, Ingolstadt, Germany after an earlier serigraph by Josef Albers. The verso has another serigraph titled "WLS V". Sheet size: 10 x 10 inches; print size: 8 3/4 x 8 3/4 inches. Mint condition new old stock. The high-resolution photo was taken with a color-calibrated process, and accurately represents the print's condition and colors. Note again this serigraph is printed on both sides; it is not two separate prints. Homage to the Square is one of the most recognizable and influential series of paintings and serigraphs of the twentieth century. These works are characterized by their seemingly simple yet profound exploration of color theory. Albers drew inspiration from an 1810 phenomenon known as Farbenlehre (Study of Color). This concept was popular at the Bauhaus, where Albers both studied and taught. Some works consist of three squares, while others have four, echoing the principles of Farbenlehre. Depending on the viewer’s proximity, colors may appear brighter or dimmer, revealing shifting depths and tones within the squares.
