Description: EF Johnson Viking Ranger , #23 SN: 89721 Wiring Version Information: This unit is currently wiring version 2 ( Keyer and modulator tube bias). This wiring version will be retained. Rebuild in process * Photos Progression * Tear-down to chassis completed * Front panel not salvageable. * AC input circuit and panel fuse holder installed* Rear chassis panel holes patched. ( Aluminum plugs & JB Weld)* VFO is a mess: Broken ceramic end plates, band switch needs re-work Needs new main tuning cap.* VFO rebuild complete & VFO tested. All resistors and caps ( other than the Tempco caps) replaced. * VFO band switch modified to prevent 470 ohm resistor turning to charcoal. * VFO shroud modified to allow shroud removal ( this VFO shroud was the "old style".( Non-removable VFO shroud)* Insulated VFO coupling rebuilt* Ball Drive overhauled, modified for use with panel snubber assembly. * Chassis scrubbing and air dry next up. * Rear chassis lip needs some sheet metal work ( two holes plugged) * Modulator tubes installed when received: (2) 6L6WGB. * This Ranger will feature 4 pin Jones Socket & IEC Male AC connector. * VFO rebuild complete, VFO shroud modifications complete. +150VDC solid state regulator installed, all old gas regulator tube components removed and discarded. VFO Oscillator sub-panel rebuilt. RF Grounding improved. * Fabricated: +300VDC regulator module, Solid State Drive Module, Bias/Keyer sub panel, PTT module. * Chassis ( top, sides & inside) scrubbed, sanded and starting air dry.* Chassis mechanical work started * Mil Grade nut plates (8) installed. 6-32 machine screws (8) and flat washers installed. * New tube sockets & custom terminal strips installed* NOTE: We use mil-grade ceramic tube sockets for all RF circuits. * Rear panel mechanical work completed (4 pin female Jones connector & IEC AC male connector).* RF Connector, key jack, Mic Connector & Circuit jumper socket assembly installed. * HV interface RF chokes installed* Tube heater line chokes installed. * Mode switch of death re-work & re-wire started. * Bottom of chassis re-wire about 70% completed: NOTE: We use thermal wire strippers for all of our "wire work", this prevents "wire nicking" a source of future wire failures... * Mode switch of death re-wire completed* Solid State +300VDC regulator & Solid State Drive module installed ( not yet wired in) * AC Line Input circuit filter components installed. * Band switch #1 wafer re-wire complete ( the original +300VDC distribution wiring was a mess, we clean and simplify this buss. More +300VDC bypass capacitors installed. ( Original bypass cap installation was inadequate. * Clamp circuit 7 watt wire wound resistor installed & wired. Clamp tube interface wiring completed. * VFO/XTAL switch installed, interface wiring complete* Solid State Drive module interface wiring complete* Keyer/Bias sub- panel installed* PTT wiring installed ( We use the OEM PTT interface scheme). * Under-chassis wiring 95% complete . * Buffer & PA tuning capacitor mounting complete* New mil-grade ceramic meter switch installed, interface wiring complete* Keyer/Bias sub panel interface wiring completed* Tube heater circuit tested, all tubes . Mode switch AC circuit tested. * Panel lamp & Transmit Lamp wiring installed. * VFO module installed, interface wiring not completed * Modulator tube adjustable bias circuit tested. * PTT module installed, interface not completed * PA output components installed. ( Anode connector, parasitic suppressor, plate blocking cap)NOTE: We fabricate custom anode connectors in-house, we use silver plated brass and include provisions to allow easy replacement of the 6146 output tube. * Loading variable capacitor installed. * Aux loading switch and components installed* Grid drive metering all bands ( except 11 meters) ( Tested with temporary panel meter) * Keyer cut-off adjustment accomplished* PTT module tested. * +300VDC regulator tested* All rewiring 98% complete* Microphone preamplifier circuit tested from rear panel mic connector* PTT tested from rear panel connector* VFO interface wiring tested * Front panel installation started. * Modulator tubes in this Ranger are 6L6GC (2)* VFO sub panel installed.
