In good condition with a couple of edge dings or environmental patina. Good condition for age!John W. Young was one of NASA’s most accomplished and distinguished astronauts, with a career that spanned over four decades. Born on September 24, 1930, in San Francisco, California, Young attended the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he earned a degree in aeronautical engineering in 1952. Following his education, Young joined the U.S. Navy, becoming a test pilot and eventually rising to the rank of captain. His expertise and flying skills made him a prime candidate for NASA's astronaut program, which he joined in 1962 as part of NASA's second astronaut group, known as the "New Nine." Young’s contributions to space exploration were immense. His first spaceflight was as the pilot of Gemini 3 in 1965, the first crewed mission of the Gemini program, alongside command pilot Gus Grissom. He later commanded Gemini 10 in 1966, setting a world altitude record at the time. Young's participation in the Gemini program was crucial in developing skills that would be used for future Apollo moon landings. In 1969, John Young became the command module pilot for Apollo 10, the mission that performed a "dress rehearsal" for the first lunar landing. It was Apollo 16 in 1972 that earned him a place in the history books when he became the ninth person to walk on the moon. As commander of Apollo 16, Young and his crew conducted significant scientific experiments and collected lunar samples, further expanding human understanding of the moon. Young's career with NASA did not stop with Apollo. He also commanded the first Space Shuttle flight, STS-1, aboard the shuttle Columbia in 1981, becoming the first astronaut to fly in space six times. His expertise and leadership during this pioneering mission helped prove that the space shuttle could successfully launch and land, paving the way for future shuttle missions. After a long and prestigious career, John W. Young retired from NASA in 2004, having spent over 42 years with the agency. He is remembered not only for his achievements in space but also for his advocacy for space safety and his role in shaping the future of space exploration. Young passed away on January 5, 2018, leaving behind a legacy as one of NASA’s most legendary and respected astronauts. His contributions to human spaceflight and his dedication to space exploration have ensured his place as one of the most important figures in the history of space exploration.
