The album cover was chosen by designer Storm Thorgerson as one of 100 best album covers John Surman (on baritone, soprano, bass clarinet and synthesizer) meets up with drummer Jack DeJohnette (who also plays congas and electric piano) for this typically introspective and spacy ECM set. Surman's playing (especially on baritone and bass clarinet) during nine group originals is worth hearing. The opening tracks of each side, "Nestor's Saga" and "Within The Halls of Neptune" are oddly hypnotic. thanks to the synthesizer programming. On other songs, Surman generates a bewildering array of squawks, squeals, wails, honks, and other occasionally distressing sounds from his sax. DeJohnette's percussion is inspired as always, and the interplay between the duo is empathic at times. This pressing is impressive, with an open, sparse, spacious soundstage so typical of ECM recordings. John Douglas Surman (born 30 August 1944) is an English jazzsaxophone, clarinet, and synthesizer player, and composer of free jazz and modal jazz, often using themes from folk music. He has composed and performed music for dance performances and film soundtracks. Jack DeJohnette (born August 9, 1942) is an American jazz drummer, pianist, and composer.Known for his extensive work as leader and sideman for musicians including Charles Lloyd, Freddie Hubbard, Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans, John Abercrombie, Alice Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, Joe Henderson, Michael Brecker, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock and John Scofield, DeJohnette was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2007. He has won two Grammy Awards and been nominated for five others.
