Binding tight, corners very good. Text block very good with some slight yellowing due to age. (Error Note for Collectors: the young girl in the book is named Tonya Hailey, although the back book cover incorrectly identifies her as Tanya.) Pictures included are of the actual book being offered for sale. As the novel opens, the life of a ten-year-old Tonya Hailey is shattered by two drunken and remorseless young men. The mostly white town of Clanton, MS, reacts with shock and horror at the inhuman crime. That is, until her father acquires an assault rifle and takes matters into his hands. For ten days, as burning crosses and the crack of sniper fire spread through the streets of Clanton, the nation sits spellbound as young defense attorney Jake Brigance struggles to save his client's life, and then his own. In this powerful courtroom drama of retribution and justice, John Grisham probes the savage depths of racial violence, as he delivers a compelling tale of uncertain justice in a small southern town. Grisham has described A Time to Kill as "very autobiographical" in that the novel's "young attorney is basically me" and the drama is based on a case he witnessed. In 1984 Grisham witnessed the harrowing testimony of a 12-year-old rape victim at the DeSoto County courthouse in Hernando, Mississippi. According to Grisham's official website, Grisham used his spare time to begin his first novel, which "explored what would have happened if the girl's father had murdered her assailants." He spent three years on A Time to Kill and finished it in 1987. When Doubleday subsequently published the best-seller The Firm to much acclaim, Wynwood Publishing, who had initially published A Time to Kill, released a trade paperback of the title, which also became a bestseller. A very unusual and scare copy of Grisham's first book, perfect for collectors of Grisham's works!
