Description: John Evelyn's Sylva, or A Discourse of Forest-Trees and the Propagation of Timber in His Majesty's Dominions was first published in 1664. It underwent various revisions, and was updated by Alexander Hunter from 1776 with illustrations by John Miller. The 4th edition of 1812, offered here, is considered to be his best production of this classic and authoritative work. Volume 1 330 pages Engraved portrait by Bartolozzi + 28 platesVolume 2 393 pages followed by Terra A Pholosophical Discourse of Earth 88 pages 17 Plates In total 45 plates (2 folding) + portrait as called for Complete DISBOUND Original full leather binding, but all hinges are gone, and spines broken. The book blocks are sound and tight, so the books require rehinging, and the spines laid down. The contents are clean and bright, some offsetting from plates, and a few pages toned due to the paper quality. The lowest price copy that I can find elsewhere is $950 - the binding is OK but it lacks 1 plate. This set is complete and just needs rehinging.
