Description: A-042This is a great example of a John A. Waller Hinge mortising tool, manufactured by the Waller Mfg. Co., Los Angeles, CA. Mr. Waller was awarded Patent #1,603,652 on Oct 19, 1926. Waller made these under his own name until Stanley bought the rights in 1930 and sold them as their No. 280 Butt Mortiser. This example is marked "Waller Tool Co 327 E Marquette Road" so is definitely pre-Stanley. The main beam measures 16-1/2" with an overall measurement of 19" long with the handle included. The cutting edge is just shy of 1-3/4". I've never had the pleasure of using one of these but imagine when adjusted properly it would be the go-to hinge mortising tool for wood doors before power routers arrived on the scene. It's an interesting collectable for sure and may even enjoy someone to use it in their shop once in a while. Thanks for your interest.
