Originally recorded in 1992 (except for the 1988 title song) and released on the Jamaican JRS label, Jimmy Cliff's Shout for Freedom was reissued ten years later by Britain's Prism Leisure Corporation. Writing and producing all the songs, Cliff brings his sound to a more contemporary style, particularly in the first several tracks on the disc, starting with "I'm a Winner," on which he raps. His lyrics are full of encouragement to the struggling masses and political statements about the dire state of things in the world and how things have to change. "We must make the world a better place for all the human race," he declares in "Oneness," an indisputable aspiration, but he asks in "Peace," "How is there going to be peace when there is no justice?" Updating his own "Sitting Here in Limbo," he revises its chorus in "Stepping Out of Limbo" as "We gonna keep putting up resistance, and we know that our faith will lead us on." After the first half-dozen tracks, which feature extensive synthesizer accompaniment, Cliff reverts to more of a traditional reggae sound, and he includes non-political love songs in "Haunted" and "Baby Let Me Feel It." But social issues are never far from his mind, and he returns to them by closing with "Shout for Freedom," set to an mbaqanga arrangement and performed with the Franko O.K. Jazz Band of Zaire.
