Description: Up for bid is a Benitoite specimen from the California State Gem Mine in San Benito County California. This has a Benitoite area about 1.5 x 0.8. It looks like this was a single large crystal that was smeared by geological forces. The matrix on this specimen was sawn flat on the bottom. Benitoite is a very rare and desirable mineral. It is Californias state gem stone and gem quality material is only found at the California State Gem Mine and other close localities. All of these mines are now closed due to asbestos contamination from nearby asbestos mines. The only way to get the material now is to buy from old collections and prices just keep going up!
