Description: ALBERT GALLATIN emigrated to the United States from Switzerland in the 1780s. Gallatin became involved in Democratic-Republican politics in the late 1790s. His adept understanding of finance propelled him into Jefferson’s cabinet as Secretary of the Treasury between 1801 and 1814. One-page, 7 ¾ x 9 ¾, DS on July 1st, 1802, by Gallatin as Thomas Jefferson’s Treasury Secretary, being a receipt from ROBERT PURVIANCE, who was Collector of Customs in Baltimore, MD. The partly-printed document from the Treasury Department states, “Three duplicate receipts of the Bank on Baltimore Nos. 21, 22 and 23, for sums amounting to Sixty-five thousand dollars have been received from you at this office. Purviance was the Collector of Customs in Baltimore, MD, from 1794 until his death in 1806. Purviance was born in Ireland and emigrated to the American colonies with his brother Samuel, who became his business partner. The brothers were stalwart Patriots and active in local Revolutionary War politics. Gallatin was considered a financial genius and once he put the nation’s finances in order, he turned his attention to diplomacy by accepting President James Madison’s request that he help secure a peace during the War of 1812. He was instrumental in securing the Treaty of Ghent. The document offered here has been tipped to another sheet by a previous collector. Toning and chipping along the left and right margins. One chip affects the top portion of an L in Gallatin’s name. Archival tape repairs along folds help to preserve the document. The document comes with two newspaper clippings acknowledging Gallatin’s accomplishments and describing a fund to collect money for erecting a statue to Gallatin in 1947.
