The material is water resistant, making it perfect for those with children who play at or around the piano, as well as for benches in churches, schools, piano practice rooms, restaurants, etc. Extra-Thick, Upgraded Foam:For additional comfort, this cushion comes with an extra-thick 1.5" thick foam padding. Standard piano bench cushions are 1" thick. We've found however, that this is often not enough (as the foam would compress and the pianist would hit the top of the bench), and that increasing the thickness of the foam by 50% made the cushion significantly more comfortable (while keeping in mind that any thicker of a cushion could begin to change the height the person was playing at too much).American Foam Padding:When selecting a foam padding, we wanted to the best option available for comfort, density and durability. Bypassing the much cheaper imported foams, we selected foam completely manufactured in the United States (from California). The cushion uses a medium-firm foam (anything softer compresses too much), and it is the same foam used as the base layer of a number of custom mattresses. At this firmness level, the manufacturer offered three levels of quality, and we selected the highest one, as it's both more comfortable and will last longer.Regarding the foam itself--it is naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to allergens, mold, bacteria, and dust mites. To ensure the quality and safety, the foam is CertiPur-US Certified, which guarantees that it is: made without ozone depleters, PBDEs, TDCPP or TCEP (“Tris”) flame retardants, made without formaldehyde, mercury, lead and other heavy metals, and made without phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
