Description: JAN VERMEER OF DELFT Superb 1913 First Edition Art Book by Philip L. Hale ~ 4-¾ pounds JAN VERMEER OF DELFT by Philip Leslie Hale was published by Small, Maynard and Company of Boston in 1913 and printed by the University Press in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. According to the Preface, the author wrote this book to get Americans better acquainted with well-known Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) and his work. Famous for domestic interior scenes of middle-class life in Holland, he is considered one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age. The massive 4-¾ pound, 7-⅜ x 10-3/4, 2-¾ inches thick 390+ page hardcover book is beautifully illustrated with over 45 pieces of Vermeer artwork on unnumbered glossy pages. Several paintings are in color and protected by thin glassine paper, including the (now) famous Girl with the Pearl Earring (real name Portrait of a Young Girl). The owners and/or location are shown below the paintings. They range from private collectors to the Royal Picture Gallery in The Hague, the Rijksmuseum and J. Six Collection in Amsterdam, the Louvre Museum in Paris, the Fine Arts Museum in Budapest, the National Gallery in London, the Gardner Museum in Boston and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Our photos show the actual 110+ year old example of JAN VERMEER OF DELFT we offer for sale. The thick high-quality art paper pages have top gilt edges. The red linen hard covers and spine have the title and author’s name embossed in gold. The red spine has faded significantly. The book is in very nice used condition but due to the weight the front and back cover are somewhat separated from the content. This is NOT a modern reprint!
