Description: Maunder's Fish ShopLithograph by James McNeill Whistler1890 Whistler depicted Maunder’s fish shop in Chelsea at least four times, and in a variety of media. It appears first as an oil of 1880/85 entitled “Street in Old Chelsea, and was also the subject of two etchings of the mid-1880’s, “The Fish-Shop, Busy Chelsea” and “Little Maunder’s.” This lithograph, printed in October 1890, offers the most complete record of the quaint façade; in the other images an awning obscures the proprietor’s name and other details. Second state of two states. This is one of 28 impressions printed by Way during Whistler’s lifetime (a larger edition was published and issued in The Whirlwind in 1890). A superb example of a pencil-signed lithograph by Whistler, with rich dark coloration and the written signs above the shop clearly visible. Signed with Whistler's butterfly in the plate and a second time in pencil at the bottom of the impression. Rich coloring throughout. Printed on delicate cream antique laid paper. Small tear to left side of sheet (about 1/2 inch--see photos), and small round hole above, also on left side. Faint scuffs from handling and suggestion of toning from mat. Carefully mounted (no adhesive) to backing board folder as shown. Way 26, Levy 42, Stratis, Spink and Tedeschi 37. Impressions without Whistler's pencil signature are at offer for $2,500 or more. Another hand-signed impression was listed for $10,000 via Christopher-Clark Fine Art, San Francisco, but has now been sold. Sheet: 12.5 x 8 inches. Domestic shipping includes full insurance (signature on delivery required).
