Description: Listed for auction is a rare autograph letter signed [ALS] by prominent Scottish psychiatrist Sir James Crichton-Browne to the Prime Minister of United Kingdom James Ramsey MacDonald. Sir James Crichton-Browne [1840 1938] was a leading Scottish psychiatrist, neurologist and eugenicist. He is well known for his studies on the relationship of mental illness to brain injury and for the development of public health policies in relation to mental health. Crichton-Browne edited the highly influential West Riding Lunatic Asylum Medical Reports 1871-1876, and he was one of Charles Darwin's leading collaborators on, The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals [1872]. Listed for auction is a [ALS] autograph letter signed by James Crichton-Browne addressed to the Prime Minister. The letter is dated 31 March 1932, and reads as follows, ''Dear Prime Minister, having been associated in years past, with several social movements of benevolent aim of which Sir James Allarchent was really the driving power. I am glad to join in the appeal which is being made to you for some suitable recognition of his indefatigable public service, which failing health has now brought a close. These services have been of a national character, have covered a wide field of practical philanthropy, and have been rendered with equal zeal and discretion and it is hoped that they may commend themselves to you as deserving of some official acxxxxxx?. With great esteem, your obedient servant''. The letter is signed ''James Crichton-Browne'' in black fountain pen. The letter measures 8.25 x 4.75 inches, with trivial toning otherwise in fine condition. Letters signed by this prominent psychiatrist are quite rare, this example has excellent content and is addressed to the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, James Ramsay MacDonald.
