Description: JAMES BURKE THE DAY THE UNIVERSE CHANGED Little, Brown (1985) 1st American edition CONDITION: former library book with plastic jacket protecting original jacket. Usual library markings (including the card holder), but still in really nice condition. I’m going to call it VERY GOOD. This is a large heavy book printed on good paper with very nice color illustrations and photographs. When people knew the earth was flat and it was the center of the universe, all life revolved around that truth.Galileo's telescope changed the truth. And with that one change, all architecture, music, literature, science, politics -- everything changed, mirroring the new view of truth. This tape is James Burke's examination of the moments in history when a change in knowledge radically altered man's understanding of himself and the world around him.Few people are able to look at human history and see it not as a jumble of half-remembered names and dates, but as an intricate mosaic of neatly interlocking pieces.Fewer still can describe the patterns and explain the parts of the puzzle so that it not only makes sense, but so that it also fascinates and intrigues, excited and entertains.James Burke tells history like it's the plot of the most interesting mystery ever written. About the author: James Burke is a Northern Irish science historian, author and television producer best known for his documentary television series called Connections, focusing on the history of science and technology leavened with a sense of humour. Commentaries on line: I absolutely *love* this book. It may well be the only non-fiction book that I have ever said this about, but I found so much entertainment as well as a wealth of education in it that it deserves this banner. Mr Burke takes historically significant moments - some I knew about and some I didn't - and shows us just how these moments turned the entire Universe of knowledge on it's ear. An absolute delight, and a must-have for anyone interested in history, science, or - most importantly - the history of science. Great readable science/ history book about major events that changed thinking and reality. Was a PBS series, great read.....too awhile but great facts and understanding of the relationship of science, faith, discovery, knowledge and society....really like it This is my favourite book of all time. Burke combines his passion for technology history (like his book "Connections" and its TV spinoffs) and expands on the social impact changes in technology made on people. I would love to see a sequel someday covering today's technology. ______________________ {I'll always combine shipping costs and refund any excess shipping charges for multiple-copy book orders.}For all "buy it now" items, please use ADD TO CART if you plan to order more than one item at the same time.______________ WOW!
