Description: Jack Kerouac Personal Book Gifted & Inscribed By Lawrence Ferlinghetti & Shig Murano(by Ferlinghetti). Estate Stamped and certified along with a COA. **Kerouac wrote to Ferlinghetti late December 1962 -- ---"Dear Larry -- Okay to use 'Iroquois' letter as you say -- Reason for silence, etc., is I just moved back to Northport with Ma & Cats in great new pad, arrived on snowy Xmas Eve -- Sterling holding my gift book you sent till I drop in his office Friday -- Thanks, Lorenzo -- Come see me again, in May, I'll send you secret street address, or more likely meet you in Manhattoes -- -Jack-O---- The "Iroquois" Kerouac is referring to is his City Lights Journal #1 entry "Among the Iroquois". The "Gift" book being held for Kerouac is this actual book. The documentation and correspondence documenting this book is quite extraordinary. With references to: -City Lights Journal -Kerouac's French Canadian Ancestry -Lawrence Ferlinghetti's signature drawing style. ***Lawrence Ferlinghetti(Laurent) writing to Kerouac in french is quite significant because he signs his name as Laurent instead of Lawrence. Which is correct because Lawrence in the French language would be a girl's name, Laurent is masculine. And just the fact that he's writing in Kerouac's birth language is quite a sign of respect to a French speaker.*** This was a rough time for Kerouac. Big Sur has just received mixed reviews. Kerouac's popularity was really getting to him as well as his drinking. Him moving to North Port was also a significant time in his life. Still in his prime. Inscribed to Kerouac: ----Pour in bon Nol 1962 Chez Ti Jean Laurant + Shig----- Now let's break down this short but very informative inscription. 1."Pour in bon Nol" translates to "Wish you a Merry Christmas" 2."Ti Jean" was Kerouac's childhood nickname. Very personal connection. 3."Laurent " is french for Lawrence. Without a doubt this is one of the most interesting Ferlinghetti signatures out there. So much so that I couldn't believe it when I saw it. Which is a valuable lesson, always do your own research. Don't simply rely on authentication because they may miss key points. As in this case the authenticator most likely spoke no french and therefore wouldn't have known that Ferlinghetti was Laurent. 4. The "face" drawings are some of the earliest I've seen from Ferlinghetti. 5. Chez Laurent(Ferlinghetti) + Shig (Murao) / From Lawrence and Shig Condition. Very Good Plus. Light handling wear and edge wear. Corners show some minor rounding. The top edge and top right corner show some creasing. Covers show a little shelf wear and moderate rubbing in areas.. Inside clean and relatively unmarked. Kerouac estate stamp and raised seal stamp. Book shows a little pressure creasing. Overall an amazing piece of correspondence and literary history.
