Description: CALIFORNIA GOLD - IRONCAP & QUARTZ SPECIMEN Ruler is 1/4" wide (6 mm). U.S. 10 cent coin is 17 mm in diameter. Specimen weight: 1.5 Gram - 23.2 Grains (Troy) Size: 12.5X10.3X10 mm If you're looking for true specimens, here's a new arrival. Note the weight and linear measurement. My source says it's from California's Mother Lode. The Sierra Nevada Mtns. are famed for their large number of fissure-type, lode mines. Most often, these are characterized by the presence of quartz veins. Until some crystal-lined vug locked up inside a vein is exposed to the light of day, one never knows what minerals may be associated with the Au. That's the case here. The primary host is quartz with a highly-oxidized, rust or 'ironcap' associated. Judging from it's color, the purity/fineness of the Au is very high. The gold also shows crystalline facets. For those who've kept track of my store, you'll know I don't sell low-grade specimens. For one thing, if it shows gold, it can't be low grade ore. These are authentic, naturally-occurring ores with visible gold. Some, like this one, are amazing! How lucky am I allowed to briefly possess this beauty, photograph it, then pass it on to some other collector? These high-grade beauties are hard to find and expensive to obtain. I base my prices, not on the amount of gold, but on a specimen's authenticity, rarity, and collectability. U.S. SHIPPING - $4.00 (vincludes USPS tracking to all U.S. destinations) INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS S&H $19.00 FAST REFUND OFFERED (If, for any reason, you're not happy with this item) I poured through old mining dumps for years looking at orange-yellow-rusty rock through a loupe, but I never found a piece with visible gold. Hydrothermal solutions carrying gold and silica crystallized into veins of gold quartz. This specimen comes from one of the many gold-bearing vein systems of California, The Golden State. My resume includes nineteen years of placer mining and designing nugget jewelry. For thirteen summers, you could have found me beneath my small flotilla of suction dredges. I mined in California, Oregon, Idaho, Arizona, and British Columbia. When not working in or with water, I was either drywashing or detecting for nuggets in both the desert and northern provinces. I figured other folks new to this field might like to hear about my mining and prospecting exploits. Basically, that's how my store began twenty some years ago. After selling off most of my mining gear, I found me a little gal, moved to Oregon, and began selling off finds and my nugget jewelry. In hindsight, this store was a logical extension of that hunt for wild gold. Time spent in the bush imparted lots of insight born from years of slinging dirt, panning, crawling around old mines and dry-washes, picking, shoveling, under-cutting banks, chucking rocks, freezing my fanny in any number of craggy creek and river-bottoms. Added to my mining experiences, throw in several years of living amongst my fellow snowbirds, North-South nomads, desert-rat prospectors, rock-hounds of every ilk and creed, artists, vendors, every one of us following the sun and our elusive dreams. Within our flock were dealers peddling specialty wares, antiquities, hand-crafted artwork, beads. There were sellers of imported goods gathered from all over the world. If you've not been to Quartzsite, that's some of what awaits you down in the Arizona outback. There always has been more to this snowbird haven than just geritol gypsies in fancy motor homes living the RV Park life-style. Before their arrival, it was inhabited mostly by rockhounds and prospectors. We're still here! We're just harder to find than we used to be. I've really appreciated all my wonderful customers these past 20 + years of peddling on Ebay. While mining for gold was incomparable, it's folks like you who make mining miners almost as much fun as actually mining. Thanks for checking out our digs. Gold of Eldorado 1-14-13
