Description: Dimension: 17.5cm Diameter, 11.0cm HeightDescriptionThis two piece well potted dome shaped covered container is painted with lively ‘large-headed boys’ playing in a garden setting in doucai enamels of green, yellow, red, brown or purple and underglaze blue on the external cavettos, the internal is undecorated, covered overall in transparent glaze with greenish tinge except for the mouth rims and foot rim revealing very fine off-white paste. The top cover is dome shaped with a central circular of two boys one blowing trumpet and another carrying a lantern, the other seven boys with musical instruments or in an activity in a backdrop of a garden setting; the lower cover with seven boys in various lively activities supported with a slight tapered foot and a six character “da ming cheng hua nian zhi” of Chenghua period 15th century, both covers fit perfectly in a ‘tongue-and-groove” bracketed mouth rims with classic scroll. This rounded cover container is an extremely rare and fine piece perhaps for storing delicacies and sweets with uncontrovertible wishes for a newborn especially a male heir bearing all wishes in auspiciousness as seen in the painted doucai narrative of boys in playful activities. The doucai enamels are brilliant and colorful with certain degree of layering, the local cobalt used is pale blue with hint of light grey, the potting is very well constructed with hardly any visible joints, the glaze drips on the internal of greenish tinge indicating multiple coats and when tapped gives a melodious high resonance with lasting impression. Examined closely, there are still fine soil adhering on the unglazed portion, and also indication of soil seepage into the glaze caused by a very long time in a soil or mud environment and interestingly microscopic organic material are present, a testament of an aged item. Provenance: Acquired during an exploration dive expedition of a ship wreck in the Java Sea.
