Description: Into the Valley: A Skirmish of the Marines by John Hersey. Published by Alfred A. Knopf, 1943. First edition, signed by author. Hardcover with dust jacket, 138 pages, 8" x 5.5", World War Two non-fiction. Into the Valley was Time Magazine writer John Hersey's account of a two week period he spent in Guadalcanal with American forces during World War 2. The central figure is United States Marine Capt. Charles Rigaud, a native of Oriskany Falls, NY. In researching Rigaud's life for the book, Hersey secured background information from Rigaud's friend, Edmund Covell. This was Covell's copy of the book, with an inscription inside written to him by Hersey. Also included is the following ephemera: -- Letter written from Hersey to Covell, Covell's letter to Hersey in response, and Hersey's follow-up letter to that plus both stamped envelopes with the Time-Life building letterhead that Hersey's letters had been enclosed in. Both letters from Hersey are on Time-Life letterhead paper and are personally signed by him.-- News clippings...five chronicling Rigaud's military exploits, one 1952 editorial by a WW2 veteran that mentions Guadalcanal and Rigaud, a clipping on author Hersey's book A BELL FOR ADANO which name drops the Rigaud book, and a clipping of Rigaud's obituary -- two vintage postcards sent from Rigaud to Covell, one Christmas-themed with a picture of Rigaud's children and the other picturing the Marine Corps school in Quantico-- a second and different obit clipping for Rigaud attached to a picture of him and Covell together. The dust jacket of the book has significant wear. It is in one piece but has a hole in the spine and several prominent tears as well as spotting on the inside. The book itself is still in very good condition. There is some age-related browning on inside covers, and there is a slight curve to the covers as the ephemera had been stored inside the book for years.
