Description: Vintage Starrett 711 "Last Word" Machinist Indicator, Like New. New old stock, with no problems that I can see. No rust. Works properly. Please note – Important! Due to a glitch in the eBay shipping system, I recently had a problem with a buyer who bought two separate items in rapid succession, used the “Shopping Cart” system, and combined the two sales into one order. Based on my shipping prefs, he should not have been able to do that, but the glitch allowed him to. It completely screwed up the shipping process, causing shipping delays and forced both of us to jump through hoops to straighten it out. On the outside chance you are buying more than one item from me, DO NOT USE THE SHOPPING CART SYSTEM. Complete the sales process fully by paying for the first item, BEFORE moving on to the second. It will make both our lives easier. (Especially mine) Thank you. In the coming weeks, I will be listing quite a few of my favorite antique indicators. Many of them are uncommon, in Good / Very Good condition, and work properly. If you save me as a seller, it will be easier to find them down the road. Or you can simply click the “Sellers Other Items” link at the top of this page to find the others. This is a Vintage ”Last Word” machinist dial test indicator, Model 711-F, made by the Starrett Manufacturing Company of Athol, Mass. In my opinion, it is one the most popular machinist dial indicators of all time. Over the past forty years I have seen them at every company I have worked for. What I didn’t know is that Starrett did not invent it. They purchased the design from a gentleman named H.A. Lowe, based in Cleveland, Ohio around 1935. Lowe had several patents on the “Last Word” design between 1915 and 1926. Note: A detailed history of Starrett is available in Ken Cope’s book, “Makers of American Machinist’s Tools”. Starrett purchased many tool designs over the years, and also created many designs of their own. Still in business today, Starrett continues to make some of the finest measurement tools available. Based on the appearance of the case and the text embossing on the top (see photos), I believe this example dates to before 1950, maybe before 1940. What I can say for sure is that this tool looks like it was never used. The cardboard protective tube, the absence of any wear on the tip, mounting bar and case tells me it was never used and was stored properly. I’m also including a tiny Starrett screwdriver. It isn’t original to the indicator, but it’s very high quality and pretty cool! The indicator works well and comes with everything you see. The pointer moves freely without any binding. The case measures about 4” by 2” by 1”. It’s an American workhorse indicator in new condition, and a great addition to any antique tool collection. *** TERMS and CONDITIONS.
