Description: 14 facsimile manuscripts with 12 having illumination in gilt, silver or both. Illuminated Manuscript Facsimiles represent manuscripts from the 4th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 12th, 15th, 16th Centuries – Rare. Manuscripts are in Fine condition with three exceptions where the hole punch has gone slightly into the left margins. Printing is exquisite with precision color registration. All but two plates have gilt. No date or publication information shown. Pre-dates digitized photography with an estimate in the 50s. Exquisite detail with images of gold within gold. Some gold plates are off by a hair with barely any quality lost. All facsimiles are inserted in a faux leather folder titled, Illuminated Manuscripts with brass screw binding (no posts). Overall binder size is 6 5/8” x 9 ¾”. Plate sizes are 6” x 9 ½”. The plate size suggests that these were meant to be bound into a book which would explain the missing publication date. The extraordinary detail and color registration suggests a painstaking process that no rotary press could achieve. Some pieces are obviously printed using separate plates for flat color. Consequently, this small compilation could have been assembled for study or research. This is supported by the origins and notes supplied at the bottom of each piece. Also, viewed as a timeline they represent a progression in style with interesting similarities. The title of each piece is listed below: A page from a MS. of the Comedies of Terence 15th C. 5” x 7 1/8” image area. Gilt appears intentionally darkened. Illuminated Roman History 16th C. 5” x 6 ¾” image area. Color registration is magnificent. Perfect. One of the most detailed plates. Les Merveilles Du Monde 14th C. 5 5/8” x 7 ¾” image area. Another remarkable color registration marvel. Unfortunately, the hole punch has gone into the left margin slightly. Commentaries On St. Paul’s Epistle to the Romans 16th C. 5 ½’ x 7 ¼” image area. Exquisite detail with more than one gold plate used. Hole punches are touching the left margin. Venetian Diploma of Semitecolo 16th C. 4 7/8” x 7” image area. Again, colors butt together perfectly. Pages 1 and 90 of The Book of Games made by command of Alphonse the Wise. No date. 4 7/8” x 7”. One has to marvel at how spectacular the original manuscript must be. View of the Colored Interior of the Temple of West Thebes. No date. 4” x 6” image area. Appears to be 4-color process under magnification with a surprint of light gilt as there is a small sparkle in areas. The Two Goddesses of Law; Ani Adoring Osiris; The Trial of the Conscience; Toth and Feather of the Law. No date. 3” x 6”. 4-Color process with no gilt plate. Ancient French Manuscripts 14th C. 4 ¾” x 5” image area floating on page with printed gilt. The German Apocalypse 14th C. 4 7/8” x 6 ¼” image area floating on page with printed gilt and silver with an ever so slight shift in gilt plate. The Psalter of St. Augustine 4th C. 4 ¾” x 5 ¾” image area with both silver and gilt plates. Exquisitely printed. Facsimile from a MS. Of Demosthenes 10th C. 4 ¾” x 7” image area. Hard to imagine the original calligraphy in the original manuscript was created with such precision by hand. Unfortunately, the holes punch into the left border. No gilt plates. Ethiopic and Coptic Biblical MSS. 8th C. 4 7/8” x 6’ image area. A gold plate shift is noticeable in the halo of the Christ figure. Nonetheless, the quality of printing is of high caliber. The Alchuine Bible 9th C. 4 ½” x 6 ¾” image area floating on page with both silver and gilt plates. Gorgeous printing. An extraordinarily rare compilation of exquisitely printed pieces worthy of frames.
