Description: This is a Carte de Visite (CDV), which is French for "visiting card." These small photo cards were commonly traded and collected by people in the 19th century; most popular in the 1860s. Standard-size Carte de Visite, measuring about 2.5 x 4 inches. Photographed by Greig & Company, 14 State Street, Rochester, New York. Includes a tax stamp on the back. This photo came from the collection of Helen E. Ames. Based on notes I found with the images, she appears to have been related to 1st Lieutenant J. D. Woods (28th Regiment, NY Volunteers), 1st Lieutenant O. V. Southworth (28th Regiment, NY Volunteers), Reverend Foster D. Ely, Isabel Warren Lockport, Titus Ames, Colonel J. D. Ames, Gould Allen, Lena Ringueberg Lockport, Captain George H. Cook (28th Regiment, 1864 NY Volunteers, 19th Infantry USA 1868), Colonel Dudley Donnely (28th Regiment, NY Volunteers), Ernest Ringueberg, and Edith Eliza Ames. I don't know how closely related she was to the above people, but I also found a note written about Colonel Dudley Donnelly, written by F. W. Cook in 1934. It said "Colonel Dudley Donnelly, Comdg 28th Regt, New York Volunteer Infy. Officer mortally wounded at battle of Cedar Run, Va., August 9th 1862. Place known as 'Cedar Mountain.' We have a similar photograph. You no doubt remember seeing the monument erected to his memory at Cold Spgs cemetery, near Lockport. I recall the funeral services held for Colonel Donnelly at Lockport; they were imposing to me and a credit to the town." Will be shipped safely and securely! All of my items are protected in archival sleeves and packaged in rigged cardboard.
