Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) CHAPEL RUINS, HOLYROOD PALACE. The Abbey of the Holy Rood or Cross was founded by David 1 in 1128, it is said, to commemorate the apparition of a cross which put to flight a stag with which he was in mortal combat. The present church or "chapel " is later, but has been the scene of all Scottish royal marriages since that of James I. It was ruthlessly damaged during the Reformation, as well as in the English invasion of 1544, but was again fitted up as a Chapel Royal by Charles I. The last restoration was completed in 1758; but the roof was too heavy for the stucture, and entirely fell ten years later, since which date the chapel has been left as a ruin. The west front is very fine. One circular arch in the south aisle is believed to be a remnant of David's original building; but most of the church dates towards the end of the century.
