The carving designs of these replica pieces have been dated back to 12th-13th century. After the originals were found in a seaside cave at Uig, Lewis Isle, Scotland in 1831, they were determined to be Scandinavian - likely Norwegian- origin. Originals are now housed in museums in England and Scotland. Their beautifully carved images have been used in the plots of many books and movies, and copied as graphic art work for book covers, etc. This is NOT-THE-USUAL LEWIS SET FOR SALE. Unlike most sets, this set has. design variants between each of the black/white pieces. SEE PHOTOS and ask if you need additional ones. So, you get many examples of the design variants of original pieces now housed in museums in Scotland and England. Some differences are quite apparent, e.g. the king; some only in detail. Even the white pawn is different from front to back! See photos. AND it's different from the black pawn. IF YOU ARE BUYING, CHECK OTHER SETS CAREFULLY. YOU'LL LIKELY FIND ONLY ONE DESIGNED KIND OF EACH PIECE IN OTHER SETS. NOT THIS ONE! NEITHER is this one of the miniature or small size sets out there. This King is 3.5 with 1.5 base, which is not round. For size reference, note that the vintage wooden Drueke chessboard on which they are displayed in some of the photos has squares 2.5". (THAT WOODEN BOARD NOT INCLUDED). Presumably made of a resin or stone composite. It's a heavy set!Red felted on bottom. MADE IN ENGLAND, UK. Total weight of set in light original cardboard box is 5lbs! With the box it's much heavier, of course; at least twice as heavy. NOTE: Some slight loss of color/paint on some of the greystone pieces. (Think greyscale from Game of Thrones.) See last photo for examples. A FABRIC BOARD IS INCLUDED, with 2 3/4" squares (see photos) that are the perfect size for these large pieces. The board works aesthetically and protects/cushions the set. It's cotton/polyester and made in USA. THE INCLUDED WOODEN BOX IS METAL PLATED and heavy. Of unknown origin, it is not an expensive box and has many imperfections and a bit of discoloring here and there (see photos) but again, it works with this set aesthetically. (The pieces themselves don't look "perfect", but replicate the amazing and beautiful designs made by Viking artisans.) "Made in England" is printed on the label of the original cheap cardboard box, which I will forward separately via slow post for a flat $7 if the buyer so desires.
