Description: The History of The Norfolk Regiment 1685 to 1918. Vol.1 - 20th June 1685 to 3rd August 1914. Vol 2 - 4th August 1914 to 31st December 1918. Petre, Loraine Published by Jarrold, Norwich (1919 and 1924) Petre wrote the two-volume history of the Norfolk Regiment, the first in 1919 and the second which was published a month before his death in 1924. First Edition. Two matching volumes, red cloth with gilt lettered spines, and regimental insignia of Britannia in gilt on the front. Volume 1: xx, 440 pages, illustrated with three full page maps, numerous sketches in the text, including further maps, and 23 plates. Volume 2 : xix, 454 pages, 2 full page maps, many sketched in the text plus further maps, and 21 plates. appedices. Both volumes have their own indexes. 7.75 X 10 inches. Closed edges foxed, with some scattered foxing here and there internally, but generally in Vg- condition. Hand written letter from W H Besant to 'Bob' (Charles Robert Bignold), former Norwich Lord Mayor, verso of the frontis in Volume 1, dated 1927. Further bookplate of R C Fiske to the fep to each of the volumes. Supplementary errata note sheet loosely laid in; this was published 3 years following the publication of volume 2, and is seldom found with the volumes accordingly. Top edge red. As New (AN): Although a used book, it should appear unread with no flaws, just as when it was sold new. Fine (F): Should have no flaws, a perfect copy of a used book. Mint: Another term for Fine. Near Fine (NF): May show a small flaw, such as shelf wear, but nearly perfect and unread. Very Good (VG): The broadest category for used books, this describes any average used book. May have small flaws, and has probably been read, but should appear overall clean and attractive. Good (G): Will probably have significant wear or damage, although is still intact. Suitable for reading, but not necessarily a good gift copy. The old saying in bookselling is "good ain't good." Fair: Another term for Poor or Reading Copy: Heavily worn or damaged, a poor book will be readable but not attractive.
