To simplify: High Thermal Resistance = Not GoodThermal Energy (Heat) transfer occurs and is therefore affected by three main variables: Conduction, Convection, and RadiationThermal pads with high thermal conductivity such as this one are very effective in solving the problem of lowering Conductive Thermal resistanceTo lower Convective thermal resistance, this is most easily achieved by increasing the velocity of airflow through a system The task of lowering Radiative Thermal Resistance is at the same time the most important yet intricate part in optimizing. It is dependent on the surface area, temperature, and even light-absorbing qualities of the thermal pad. Luckily, The properties of High-Conductivity silicone, solve the absorption part, but this property alone is independent of the thickness of the pad itself. What will help is the addition of surface area, through the introduction of a third, reflective body (a heat sink). Since the high absorption is satisfied by this thermal pad, the addition of a reflective, multi-directional metallic heat-sink will bring the radiative thermal resistance down to as close as its theoretical, but practically impossible value of zero. This is the science behind chip-cooling. For those interested, here's the theoretical physics behind it. If this just confuses you further, don't worry, its just represents the 3 layered components (Chip, Pad, & heat-sink) attaining a high value absorption rate--reducing thermal resistance. The point is to inform you the buyer of what you need and save you time and money buying what you don't. So long as the pad can uniformly make contact with the chip as well as the heat-sink if you use one; any high conductivity thermal pad should do. Pay attention to the hardness and the breakdown voltage as well. A thicker pad could potentially reduce thermal conductivity. Whereas a thermal pad that's too thin (less than 0.5mm) runs the risk of cracking under high pressure. A power-hungry component that is higher than the rated thermal conductivity can also result in disappointing outcomes. For reference: 10Sc is the rough equivalent to the hardness of a gummy bear.
