Description: Two-page adjoined letter to Mr. Walford of the Peerage paper stating his son and defending himself to the paper which was a wild scandal at the time. Signed at the conclusion, "Bolingbroke." This letter shows the long running feud he was known for with the Peerage. Includes the advertisement of the peerage where he underlines; "Addressed to the publishers," regarding all corrections. Henry Mildmay St John (1820–1899) became 5th Viscount Bolingbroke on the death of his father, the 4th Viscount, in 1851. He took his seat in the House of Lords later the following year. Henry then engaged in a long-running feud with the peerage publications, including Debrett's, Dods and Burkes Peerage. In order to 'legitimize' his children so that the eldest son could inherit the title, he tried to pass them off as the offspring of his non-existent marriage to Ellen Medex. Although the peerage books had previously accepted that he was married, they began to unravel the lies and removed all reference of his marriage and any heirs apparent, instead installing one of Henry's cousins, Canon Maurice St John, as heir presumptive to the title. Henry St John died in November 1899. After the funeral the existence of a wife and heir was revealed, a scandal which was reported in all the British newspapers. Mary continued to live at Lydiard Park and died in February 1940.This is from the Bill Moore estate. Bill Moore was a celebrity portrait artist who worked with pencil and his sketches looked like photography. Bill would use the alias that he was a reporter and got to go to all the Hollywood events without ever getting kicked out of one. He worked for Barbra Streisand and Jane Seymour and is mentioned in the book, “Marilyn Monroe A-Z.” At the shows he attended and because of his contacts each autograph we offer under his name was obtained in person by Bill Moore. Bill died in 1989 of Aids, two years before Magic Johnson announced he had the disease and medication was available no longer making Aids a deadly disease. After Bill died his collection was left to his best friend Candice Baron who sold it to us. Comes with a full Letter of Authenticity from Todd Mueller Authentics.
