Description: Mid Century RG Hardie regular size practice chanter with new Q1 reed and extra bit of waxed yellow hemp. Chanter is made of African Blackwood with Catalan sole&ferrule and newer plastic mouthpiece. Robert G Hardie was a champion piper and pipemaker. His company (established in 1950) set standards to become one of the most successful and influential pipemakers. RG Hardie mid-century and current pipes are known for high quality materials and craftsmanship. This chanter is no exception. This chanter would make a fine gift or practice instrument of choice for any piper or piping student. The African Blackwood is in excellent condition with the original finish. The bore is straight and finger holes show little use. The chanter top shows no signs of abuse or cracking from misuse. The mouthpiece looks to be a newer make. The Catalan imitation ivory ferrule and sole have mellowed from cream to the classic burnt-orange color. New waxed yellow hemp has been applied to the chanter tenon & mouthpiece tenon. An extra bit of waxed yellow hemp is included for adjusting with use. The reed seat is unaltered and accepts contemporary reeds with no problem. I have included a new Q1 reed…it was tested and plays in tune across the scale range. The chanter has a nice balanced tone. Measures 19 inches overall length. Bottom line… fit, finish and function are consistent with little to no use. It’s ready for a new home! Recommendations for use: Do limit moisture from breath absorbing into the chanter top wood. After every use, remove chanter top and separate the mouthpiece..swap out to remove moisture. Monthly (at least) …oil the wooden chanter top with bore oil or alternate non-oxidizing tree oil (almond oil example). The chanter will last a lifetime if you do maintenance to limit water absorption. If not, chanter tops will crack from pressure exerted by internal layers of wood swelling from water.
