Description: HANDWRITTEN NOTE signed by WILLIAM LAMB 2nd VISCOUNT MELBOURNE dated February 15 1845 (?) MELBOURNE was the first Prime Minister during the long reign of Queen Victoria. It was Melbourne who tutored the young queen in the art and administration of politics as well as in the protocols of royalty. From 1837, the year of her enthronement, until 1840, when she married Albert, MELBOURNE was Victoria's most influential advisor and likely she would have referred to him as her dear friend. Although MELBOURNE'S Premiership has not been favorably reviewed by historians and although his influence with Victoria diminished after her marriage, he nevertheless remained in her heart until his death in 1848. This 12-line note is addressed to "My Dear Sir" and that is as far as I have gotten in deciphering MELBOURNE'S script. Perhaps more perceptive and patient eyes than mine can fully interpret the penmanship. This letter is in excellent condition save some tanning over its 177 years. MELBOURNE'S signature appears to have been slightly smudged by his pen at the very end of his name (see photos). The paper is without stain, tears or nicks and it has been, at some point, mounted on heavier board.
