Description: St Damien of MolokaiSingle Decade Rosary Patron of AIDs patients, Infectious Diseases, Leprosy, Outcasts and Hawaii When I designed and made this chaplet I chose the beads to reflect some of the natural beauty of the IslandThe ten Hail Mary beads are 8 mm, faceted and fire-polished Czech glass, in alternating emerald green and a dark aqua/crystal bicolor. The single Our Father is a white glass pearl with a textured surface that has a bit of sparkle. The nickle silver medal and 1-1/2" silver toned St Benedict crucifix were made in Italy; the chaplet itself was designed and handmade by me in our home in the USA. Chaplet is about 9-1/2" long and comes gift boxed and with St Damien prayer card, St Benedict prayer card, Divine Mercy and rosary pamphlets, and an assortment of other prayer cards plus a carry pouch and a gift bag and tissue paper to hold it all for gift giving. Although they are not like the usual smaller professionally printed prayer cards, most of our customers prefer them since they are like a pamphlet with 4 "pages" and several images, prayers, patronages and often other information about the saint or Catholic devotion. Father Damien labored to show the love of Christ to the outcasts of society - Leprosy patients, young and old, who had been banished to the island of Molokai to live out their days without comfort or even the most basic necessities. This young priest asked to serve them, caring for the sick, building places for the people to live and be tended. Eventually he caught leprosy himself and died in 1889. He was considered a saint in Hawaii for over 100 years; now the rest of the world recognizes him since he was canonized in 2009. A wonderful role-model and patron of AIDS patients and others who suffer from infectious diseases which cause ostracism and fear. How often in the last 100 years have we heard about a new infectious disease - Polio, Swine flu, Bird flu, HIV; it seems that we conquer one disease only to have another rear up to threaten us such as the one we face today. Of course, deadly infectious diseases are nothing new, and today medicine is better equipped than ever to deal with them. But this fact does little to help our fear - for that we need to turn to God, as Father Damien did - to gain the strength we need to go on. Fr Damien is also the patron saint of outcasts, people suffering from leprosy and other diseases, and the State of Hawaii.
